After 149 Kentucky Derbys, Louisville Knows Sports

Louisville Pure Tap® 5k is back!

This Year, the Race Goes to the Dogs

Louisville, Ky. – June 14, 2023 – The Louisville Sports Commission, in partnership with Louisville Water Company, will host the family-friendly, dog-friendly Louisville Pure Tap® 5k walk/run at Shawnee Park in Louisville’s West End on Sat., Sept. 9, 2023.

The event will start at 8:30 a.m. at the pavilion in Shawnee Park, one of Frederick Law Olmstead’s signature Louisville parks. The 5K will be professionally chip-timed, and all participants will receive a commemorative Pure Tap® 5k short-sleeve tri-blend race shirt.

New this year, race participants are invited to bring their dogs to participate. There will be an additional $10 fee to register dogs, with proceeds supporting Friends of Metro Animal Services (FOMAS). Dogs will receive a special bandana to recognize their participation.

“Thanks to our long-time relationship with Louisville Water Company, we’ve been able to offer the Pure Tap® 5k since 2011 and are excited to have it back again in 2023,” said Louisville Sports Commission President & CEO Greg Fante. “And the opportunity to have FOMAS be part of the event is especially meaningful to me. My family recently adopted our dog Baxter from Louisville Metro Animal Services and was able to see first-hand how support from the local community enables them to be successful.”

“This year’s Louisville Pure Tap® 5k has the same family-friendly and competitive spirit,” said Kelley Dearing Smith, Louisville Water vice president – communications and marketing. “I hope the location and the invitation for dogs to join brings a new group of runners and walkers to the event. While a large restoration project at the Louisville Water Tower means we can’t host the 5k at our traditional location, Shawnee Park is a perfect place to celebrate Louisville’s drinking water and the value of water to a healthy lifestyle.”

“Friends of Metro Animal Services is very excited to partner with the Louisville Sports Commission for the dog-friendly Louisville Pure Tap® 5K,” said Katrina Hutchins, FOMAS executive director. “We love to support events that allow families to include their four-legged friends and are glad that this popular race is adding the option to include dogs this year. We are also thankful for the awareness this partnership will bring to our community’s homeless pet population crisis. There are a lot of amazing dogs at Louisville Metro Animal Services waiting to become someone’s new running buddy and best friend.”

Participants can register online until Sept. 8. Registration is $25, and will increase to $30 on Aug. 15.
