It all leads up to the four-day Olympic Trials, Friday, June 16 through Monday, June 19 at the KFC Yum! At the conclusion of competition, USA Gymnastics will announce the 2028 Olympic Teams for artistic, trampoline and rhythmic gymnastics live in front of the KFC Yum! Center audience.

“In 2028, the Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles, but one of the most important moments on that journey will happen right here in Louisville with our Olympic Trials,” said USA Gymnastics President and CEO Kyle Albrecht. “With the support of an incredible community and committed partners across the city and state, we’re confident we will deliver an experience that reflects the very best of our sport, our country, and the Olympic movement.”

High Impact

Gymnastics City USA was first held in 2024, when 200,000 visitors traveled to Minneapolis, driving nearly $75M in economic impact, while social media coverage of the Olympic Trials reached a record 1.9 billion people. Fans also took part in the additional events surrounding Gymnastics City USA festivities, including the FlipZone fan interaction area and the 2028 USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame induction ceremony, where legends reunite.

As Louisville steps up to host the Olympic Trials, it brings a rich and authentic sports legacy that blends tradition, global recognition and elite competition. Home to the world-renowned Kentucky Derby since 1875, the city has long welcomed international audiences and delivered unforgettable moments on the global stage. The city is the hometown of boxing legend Muhammad Ali and is anchored by the passionate fan base of University of Louisville Athletics. Its sporting legacy continues to evolve through a vibrant professional sports scene, highlighted by the rise of Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC.

“This is an incredible moment for Kentucky as we welcome the nation’s best gymnasts to Louisville who are chasing their American Dream and the chance to compete at the 2028 Olympics,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “Athletes and their families, along with fans from across the country, will see the hospitality and excitement that have made our state a global sports destination – for horse racing, professional soccer, college basketball and now the Olympic trials.”

Downtown Louisville will anchor 15 days of festivities, with Fourth Street Live! serving as a hub for fan activations, live entertainment and community celebration surrounding competition at the KFC Yum! Center and the KICC. Additional programming throughout the city will create an immersive, citywide experience for athletes, families and fans, reinforcing Louisville’s reputation for hospitality and its ability to bring major events to life beyond the field of play.

“Hosting the U.S. Olympic Team Trials is a defining moment for Louisville and a testament to our community’s ability to deliver world-class events on the biggest stage,” Louisville Sports Commission President & CEO Greg Fante said. “Gymnastics City USA 2028 will showcase the very best athletes in the world, as well as the energy, hospitality and passion that make Louisville such a special place. We are proud to play a role in helping shape the journey to Los Angeles and to create an unforgettable experience for athletes and fans alike.’”

The Louisville Sports Commission, alongside state and local partners, led the effort to secure the event as part of its ongoing mission to attract and host premier sporting events that drive economic impact and community pride.

Hometown Games

The U.S. Olympic Trials take on special significance in 2028 as Los Angeles prepares to host the first Summer Olympic Games on U.S. soil since 1996 in Atlanta, where the “Magnificent Seven” women’s team won the first-ever Olympic women’s team gymnastics gold for the U.S. Four members of that team – Amanda Borden, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, and Shannon Miller – attended Wednesday’s announcement to help kick-off the push to the next domestic Olympic Games. (See below for quotes from each member of the team.)

USA Gymnastics athletes have modern history on their side as well, with the women’s team returning to gold-medal position at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, while the men won team bronze for the first time since 2008. Anchoring the men’s team to victory in the final event was Stephen Nedoroscik, who became a pop culture sensation meme as “Pommel Horse Guy”, adding individual pommel horse bronze to go with his team bronze.

“The Olympics are the pinnacle of achievement for any gymnast, but the Olympic Trials may be the most important competition of our lives,” said Nedoroscik, who hosted the announcement and hopes to compete at the 2028 Olympic Team Trials. “I’m looking forward to hopefully being at the KFC Yum! Center in two years to try to make my second Olympic Team. The Paris Olympics were incredible, but nothing would beat having a chance to win a medal on home soil in Los Angeles.”

Tickets for the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics will go on sale in 2027. Ticket sales for the accompanying USA Gymnastics Championships and registration for the 2028 National Congress and Trade Show will open in 2028.

1996 Women’s Olympic Team quotes

Below are quotes from the four members of the “Magnificent Seven” who attended Wednesday’s announcement. Other members of the team include Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, and Kerri Strug.

Amanda Borden, team captain, team gold medal: “We were so proud to be part of an incredible performance in Atlanta, winning the first gold medal ever for a U.S. women’s gymnastics team. We are looking forward to seeing what the 2028 team accomplishes in Los Angeles.

Shannon Miller, team gold medal, balance beam gold: “Competing on home soil is an unforgettable experience. We felt it during the Atlanta Games in 1996, the energy, pride, and support push you to give everything you have. With the Olympics returning to the United States, a new generation will get to feel just how powerful that moment truly is.”

Dominique Moceanu, team gold medal: “The future of U.S. gymnastics is incredibly bright for both the men’s and women’s programs. As the road to Los Angeles begins in Louisville, a new generation of athletes will rise—each with the opportunity to leave their mark on the sport’s history.

Jaycie Phelps, team gold medal: “The focus is on competition, but even 30 years later, being an Olympic gold medalist has shaped our lives in so many ways.  The Olympic Team that will be chosen in Louisville will also have their lives changed forever.”
